Four Seasons Tree Service arranges tree work across the Perth metropolitan area, with the core of it south of the Swan. Perth is an easy place to take a tree out
Most of the metro area sits on the Swan Coastal Plain, which is sand. Bassendean sand inland, Spearwood and limestone closer to the coast. Two practical consequences follow from that, and both of them work in your favour.
Stump grinding is fast. A grinder cuts sand at a rate it simply cannot manage in heavy clay, so the stump line on a Perth quote is generally cheaper than the equivalent job in Melbourne or Sydney. Full root-plate extraction is also realistic here rather than a last resort, which matters if a slab, pool or retaining wall is going in over the top.
The other consequence is regulatory. Western Australia has no statewide tree preservation order. There is no single law that protects a tree on private land across the state, so the rules are written council by council, and a lot of Perth councils are markedly more permissive than their eastern-states equivalents. That is genuinely good news for most homeowners, but it is not a free pass: Melville and Fremantle both keep significant tree registers, some areas carry vegetation conditions on the title or the subdivision approval, and every verge tree in the state belongs to the local government. The trees we deal with most
Marri and jarrah through the foothills and the older suburbs, tuart on the coastal limestone from Fremantle south, WA peppermint in the coastal gardens, and lemon-scented gums everywhere someone planted one in the 1980s without thinking about how big it gets.
The lemon-scented gums are the ones that generate summer callouts. They shed heavy limbs on hot, still days with no wind involved at all, and they do it over driveways and pools because that is where they were planted. Marri drops gumnuts and can carry canker. Tuart is slow, structural and worth keeping wherever it can be kept.
Summer easterlies and the storm fronts that follow them are the other reliable source of work. A limb across a driveway at nine at night is an emergency job, not a quote to be scheduled next fortnight.

Do I need council approval to remove a tree in Perth?
Often not, but it depends entirely on which council you are in. Western Australia has no statewide tree preservation order, so each local government sets its own rules. Several Perth councils barely regulate trees on private land, while Melville and Fremantle maintain significant tree registers. Street trees on the verge belong to the council everywhere, without exception.
Why do gum trees drop limbs in summer with no wind?
It is called summer branch drop and lemon-scented gums are the worst offenders for it in Perth. On hot, still days a mature limb can fail at the union without warning, usually in the afternoon. It is not a sign the tree is dead. Long horizontal limbs over a driveway, pool or patio are the ones worth getting looked at before December.
How quickly can someone come and look at a tree?
Quotes are free and done onsite, usually within a couple of days. A limb already down on a roof, a split trunk or a tree leaning over a boundary after a storm is treated as urgent and gets looked at the same day where it is safe to work.
Do you take the stump away as well?
Only if the quote says so, so check. Grinding the stump is a separate line item from felling the tree, and so is carting the grindings away. Perth sand grinds fast, which makes it cheaper here than in eastern-states clay, but it is still not free. Ask for it to be itemised rather than assumed.
What happens to the timber and the chip?
Chip is either left on site for mulch if you want it or carted off. Green marri and jarrah mulch should be aged before it goes on garden beds, not spread fresh around shallow-rooted plants. Larger timber is usually cut to firewood lengths and stacked, or removed for a fee if you have nowhere to put it.
Are the crews insured?
Ask to see the certificate of currency before work starts, every time, from anyone. This is a referral site and the work is carried out by independent contractors, so we cannot verify anyone's paperwork on their behalf. Public liability and workers compensation are the two documents that matter when something goes through a roof.
