Low ground inside a river bend
Belmont sits in a bend of the Swan, on flat, low alluvial country between the river and the airport. It is a different soil profile to most of the metropolitan area — not the clean coastal sand of the southern suburbs, but heavier river-deposited ground that holds water through winter.
That produces its own tree population and its own set of problems.
Flooded gums
Eucalyptus rudis is the Swan River eucalypt and it is the dominant large native here, particularly along the foreshore through Ascot and Rivervale. They grow quickly in damp ground, root shallow and wide rather than deep, and shed limbs freely.
Several practical consequences follow. They generate a reliable stream of storm and limb work every winter. Whole-tree windthrow is more plausible here than on a dry sand block, so soil lifting at the base of a trunk after a front deserves attention. And a lot of them are on foreshore reserve rather than private land, which puts them with the City rather than the adjoining owner.
Where one is on a private block, deadwooding and selective reduction generally serves better than removal. They tolerate it, they regrow, and on a riverbank they are doing structural work.
The rest of the suburb
Away from the river, Belmont and Cloverdale are 1950s to 1970s housing on flat blocks, with the planting of the era — jacaranda, Cape lilac, olive, oleander, Queensland box, and lemon-scented gums that have got large. Kewdale runs into industrial land where the tree work is boundary screening and clearance rather than gardens.
Redcliffe and the streets closest to the airport carry the same suburban mix with the added quirk of airspace height limits, which matter far more for planting decisions than for removals.
Ground work
Alluvial rather than sandy. Stump grinding is still straightforward, but the machine needs care about where it tracks in the low-lying parts after winter rain, and the ground can be soft enough to mark badly. Full extraction is more work here than on the clean sand at Canning Vale but far less than up on the scarp at Kalamunda.
Backfill still settles, so leave a ground stump hole proud.
Access
Generally good. Flat ground, wide streets, driveways on most blocks, and few of the battleaxe subdivisions that make Innaloo difficult. The exceptions are the deeper riverside lots where the tree is at the far end of the garden.

Western Australia has no statewide tree preservation order, so the City sets its own rules for trees on private land.
