Bassendean sand. The grey inland sand across Canning Vale, Gosnells, Kwinana and much of the southern corridor. Grinds fast and cleanly, and this is where Perth's cost advantage on stump work is most obvious.
Spearwood sand and limestone. Closer to the coast through Fremantle, Cockburn, Rockingham, Baldivis and Secret Harbour. Still sand at the surface but with limestone and caprock below, sometimes only a few hundred millimetres down. Where the rock is shallow, it sets the depth, not the machine.
Clay over granite on the scarp. Armadale, Gosnells' eastern edge and Kalamunda. This is the slow ground — closer to an eastern-states job, with more machine time and more wear.
The things underground that ruin a day
Perth blocks are full of infrastructure that nobody can see from the surface:
- Soakwells. Near-universal for roof drainage, often sited near old trees, and a grinder will crack a lid without slowing down.
- Reticulation. Almost every garden here has it, usually shallow poly in sand, and old systems are rarely where anyone remembers them being.
- Septic tanks and leach drains. Still in use on unsewered blocks in the outer areas and in parts of the hills.
- Pool plumbing, gas, power and water services. All of it shallow, all of it expensive.
Point out what you know. The rest is why the operator probes before cutting.
Settling, and how to plan around it
Sand settles. A ground stump hole backfilled with chip and sand will drop noticeably over the first winter, sometimes 100mm or more on a big stump. Three ways to deal with it: leave the backfill sitting proud and let it settle to level, wait a season before turfing, or cart the grindings away and bring in clean compacted fill if you are paving over the top.
Turfing the week after grinding and then wondering why there is a saucer in the lawn by August is the common mistake.
When grinding is not enough
If a slab, footing, pool shell or retaining wall is going in over the stump, the ground chip will settle unevenly under it. That job is full stump and root-plate extraction, which sandy soil makes considerably more practical in Perth than it is elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions
Is stump grinding cheaper in Perth than other cities?
Generally yes, for the same stump. The Swan Coastal Plain is sand rather than clay, and a grinder cuts sand far faster with less wear on teeth. That is a real cost difference, not a marketing line. Coastal limestone and scarp clay are the exceptions and both slow the job down.
Why does the ground sink afterwards?
Because the hole is backfilled with grindings and soil that have not been compacted, and Perth sand settles readily under winter rain. Expect a noticeable dip after the first wet season. Leave the backfill proud, or wait a season before turfing, or bring in clean fill and compact it if you are paving.
Do you hit soakwells?
Not if we know where they are. Soakwells are standard on Perth blocks for roof drainage and they are frequently within a metre or two of an old tree. They are invisible from the surface, and a grinder will go straight through a lid. Same for reticulation, which is on almost every property here. Mark it or point it out.
What about limestone?
Closer to the coast — Fremantle, Cockburn, Rockingham, Secret Harbour — caprock limestone sits close to the surface in places. A grinder will not cut limestone, so the achievable depth is sometimes set by the rock rather than by the stump. The operator will tell you on the day if that applies.
